    From Joensuu, take a bus to Ilomantsi. North Karelia's public transport operates the bus service. Upon arrival at the Ilomantsi bus station, a taxi or ridesharing service can be used to reach Taitajan Taival Hiking Trail. The trailhead is approximately 10 km from the bus station, with taxi fares ranging from 15 to 25 euros.

    From the center of Ilomantsi, take Petkeljärventie road (Road 490) heading northeast. Continue for approximately 10 km until you see signs for Taitajan Taival Hiking Trail. The trailhead is located at Petkeljärventie 62, 82980 Ilomantsi. A parking area is available for visitors. Parking is free.

Taitajan Taival Hiking Trail, located in Ilomantsi, is North Karelia's oldest marked hiking route, established in the turning point of the 1950s to 1960s. This 31-kilometer trail guides hikers through a diverse and breathtaking scenery, from the southern part of Petkeljärvi National Park to Mekrijärvi village. The trail follows a ridge path that has been used for thousands of years as a travelling route. These ridges historically served as routes to Mekrijärvi, continuing along the Koitajoki and Pielisjoki rivers, eventually connecting to old White Karelian trading routes leading to the Bothnian Gulf. Hikers can enjoy views overlooking Lake Koitere. The trail runs for a long distance in the Petkeljärvi – Putkelanharju Natura 2000 area. As you hike along the Taitajan Taival, you'll find yourself immersed in the tranquility of the Finnish landscape. The gentle rustling of leaves and the soft sounds of water create a peaceful atmosphere perfect for reflection and relaxation. There are lean-to shelters available for overnight stays. The trail also passes many military historical sites. The trail culminates near Mekrijärvi village, close to Sissola, the home of Simana Sissonen, a noteworthy folklore singer.
