Discover more about Möhkö ironworks

Möhkö Ironworks, located in the easternmost part of Finland in the village of Möhkö, is a captivating journey into Finnish industrial and cultural history. Founded in 1838, it grew to become the largest lake ore ironworks in Finland, driving the development of the surrounding village. Today, the ironworks operates as a museum, offering visitors a multifaceted experience that combines industrial heritage, wartime history, and the natural beauty of the North Karelia region. The museum exhibitions, housed in the ironworks mansion Pytinki and the old shop building Ambari, showcase different eras of Möhkö's past. One exhibit details the iron refining process, from extracting lake ore to smelting pig iron. Another explores Möhkö's role during the Second World War, a period that deeply impacted the village. A third exhibition focuses on the forestry industry that sustained the region after the ironworks declined. During the summer, Pytinki hosts a rotating themed exhibition. Visitors can explore the atmospheric grounds, including the ruins of blast furnaces, restored canals, and a waterwheel, all testaments to the site's industrial past. The Lemmenpolku path leads to the Möhkönkoski rapids, offering scenic views. The logging site café Möhkön Manta, situated in an old barge, evokes the atmosphere of the logging era. Möhkö's location near the Russian border also gives it a unique historical significance. The village was occupied by Soviet troops during the Winter War, and peace negotiations for the Ilomantsi region were held in Pytinki.
