Discover more about Saint-Leu Catholic Church at Amiens

The Saint-Leu Catholic Church, nestled in the heart of Amiens' Saint-Leu quarter, stands as a testament to the city's rich religious and architectural heritage. Built in 1481, it is one of the oldest parishes in Amiens, succeeding a former priory dedicated to Saint Lambert. The church is dedicated to Saint Leu, a 7th-century bishop of Sens. The church's Flamboyant Gothic style is evident in its three-vessel plan, adapted to the ground's structure at the valley's bottom. The interior features a wooden vaulted ceiling shaped like an inverted boat hull. The church's exterior is constructed of chalk on a sandstone base. The bell tower, constructed around 1500, adds to the church's striking facade. Throughout its history, the Saint-Leu Catholic Church has faced numerous challenges. In 1581, a violent storm caused the steeple to collapse, resulting in 68 deaths. During the French Revolution, in 1793, the church was stripped of its furnishings and used as a fodder store for the army before being returned to worship in 1796. Restoration efforts were undertaken in the 19th century. The church's stained glass windows were destroyed during World War I. Despite these events, the church has been recognized as a protected historical monument. Today, visitors can explore the church and appreciate its architectural details and tranquil atmosphere. The surrounding Saint-Leu district, with its charming streets and canals, adds to the overall experience.
