Discover more about Chaîne des Puys

The Chaîne des Puys, also known as the Monts Dôme, is a remarkable chain of approximately 80 volcanoes stretching over 45 km in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. As the youngest volcanic ensemble in mainland France, its activity began around 95,000 years ago and ended approximately 7,000 years ago. The range is characterized by a variety of volcanic morphologies, a result of different types of volcanic activity. The term 'puy' comes from the Occitan word 'puèi,' meaning a high place with a rounded summit. These volcanoes are known as 'monogenetic,' meaning they originated from a single, brief eruption. The Chaîne des Puys is part of the Volcans d'Auvergne Regional Natural Park and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2018 due to its exceptional tectonic significance. Visitors can explore numerous trails that wind through the volcanoes, offering panoramic views and a chance to witness the unique geological environment. The area is easily accessible and well-suited for both short hikes and longer treks.
