Discover more about Galerie Du Palais Des Papes

The Palais des Papes, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995, is a testament to the power and influence of the Roman Catholic Church during the 14th century. Constructed in less than 20 years (1335–1352), this immense 15,000 square meter palace is equal to the size of four Gothic cathedrals. In 1309, Pope Clement V moved the papal court from Rome to Avignon due to the violent conflicts in Rome. Over the next several decades, seven popes expanded the Palais des Papes. The palace is composed of two joined buildings: the Old Palace of Benedict XII, resembling a fortress, and the New Palace of Clement VI. Together, they form the largest Gothic building of the Middle Ages. Visitors can explore more than 25 rooms, including audience halls, ceremonial rooms, and private apartments. Highlights include the Great Chapel, the Consistory, and the Stag Room, known for its 14th-century frescoes. The palace also hosts art exhibitions and cultural events throughout the year, continuing a tradition that began in 1947. A visit to the Palais des Papes includes a Histopad, a digital tablet that uses augmented reality to show how the palace looked in the 14th century.
