Discover more about Roman Forum of Athens (Roman Agora)

The Roman Forum of Athens, also known as the Roman Agora, offers a glimpse into the city's Roman past. Built between 19-11 BC with funding from Julius Caesar and Emperor Augustus, it served as the commercial and administrative center of Roman Athens, replacing the Ancient Agora. Located north of the Acropolis, the Roman Agora was designed as a large, open-air courtyard surrounded by colonnades. Within the colonnades were shops, with a fountain on the south side. The main entrance was through the Gate of Athena Archegetis on the west side. The Tower of the Winds, an octagonal structure that served as a clock, weather vane, sundial, and compass, is one of the most well-preserved structures within the Forum. Over the centuries, the Roman Agora underwent changes, including paving during Hadrian's reign and later occupation by houses, workshops, churches, and mosques during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods. Today, visitors can explore the ruins and imagine the bustling marketplace and civic life that once thrived here.
