Discover more about Church of the Four Martyrs

Located south of Rethymno's old town, the Church of the Four Martyrs is a significant religious site dedicated to Angelis, Manouil, Georgios, and Nikolaos, who were martyred by the Ottomans. These men, originally from the village of Melambes, were executed in 1824 for refusing to convert to Islam. Their unwavering faith led to their recognition as local saints and protectors of Rethymno. The current church, inaugurated in 1975, is the third to be built on this site, with previous structures erected in 1905 and 1955. The church is designed in a three-aisled temple. The northern aisle is dedicated to the Forty Martyrs, and the southern aisle to the Holy Ten. Inside, visitors can admire the stunning frescoes and intricate iconography that reflect the traditions of Cretan Orthodox Christianity. The iconostasis features icons by Fotis Kontoglou, and the church also houses an icon of the Four Martyrs by Ioannis Frangopoulos. Three of the four martyrs' skulls are preserved within a reliquary in the church. A chapel dedicated to Saint Savvas is located in the basement. Today, the Church of the Four Martyrs serves not only as a place of worship but also as a cultural hub, hosting local events and welcoming visitors from around the world.
