The Abduction of Europe sculpture is a notable landmark in Agios Nikolaos, Crete, bringing to life the ancient Greek myth of Europa and Zeus. According to the legend, Zeus, captivated by the beauty of the Phoenician princess Europa, transformed himself into a white bull to approach her. Europa, charmed by the gentle creature, climbed onto its back, at which point Zeus carried her across the sea to Crete. The sculpture, created by Cretan artists Nikos and Pantelis Sotiriadis, stands approximately 4 meters high and weighs around 6 tons. It portrays Europa atop the bull, symbolizing the ideals of European unity, solidarity, and peace. The statue is made of brass. Located in the port area of Agios Nikolaos, off Akti Themistokleous, the sculpture is easily accessible and has become a symbol of the town. A similar sculpture by the same artists is also located in front of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
