Horn of Amalthea: A Symbol of Abundance

A modern sculpture inspired by Greek mythology, symbolizing abundance and offering stunning views of Mirabello Bay in Agios Nikolaos.

4.4

The Horn of Amalthea stands proudly in Agios Nikolaos, a coastal town on the island of Crete, as a modern tribute to ancient Greek mythology. This impressive sculpture draws inspiration from the legend of Amalthea, the goat who nurtured the young god Zeus with her milk and honey in a cave on Mount Ida. According to the myth, Zeus, while playing, accidentally broke off one of Amalthea's horns. To compensate for this, Zeus blessed the horn, ensuring it would always be filled with whatever its owner desired, thus becoming a symbol of wealth, nourishment, and eternal abundance. The sculpture, created by Nikos and Pantelis Sotiriades in 2000, captures this essence, offering visitors a visual representation of the Cornucopia. Located near Kitroplateia Beach, the Horn of Amalthea provides a scenic backdrop with stunning views of Mirabello Bay and the mountains of eastern Crete. While the sculpture is a sight to behold during the day, it becomes particularly enchanting at dusk or night when illuminated. The circular frame at the base of the sculpture allows visitors to capture memorable photos, seemingly becoming a part of the horn's overflowing bounty. The sculpture serves as a reminder of the rich mythological heritage of Crete and the enduring symbols that have shaped Greek culture.
