Discover more about Mount Ida

Mount Ida, or Psiloritis, is the highest mountain on the island of Crete, reaching an elevation of 2,456 meters (8,058 feet). Located in the Rethymno region, this imposing mountain is more than just a geological wonder; it's a place of immense historical and mythological significance. In Greek mythology, Mount Ida was sacred to the Titaness Rhea and is famed as the cave where Zeus, the king of the gods, was born and raised. To protect him from his father Cronus, who devoured his children, Rhea hid the infant Zeus in a cave on Mount Ida. The Kouretes, mythical warriors, danced and clashed their weapons to mask the baby's cries. The Idaean Cave (Ideon Antron) was venerated throughout antiquity as the place where Zeus was nurtured. For centuries, Mount Ida has been a site of pilgrimage and reverence, drawing spiritual seekers and nature enthusiasts to its rugged slopes. Hiking trails crisscross the mountain, leading adventurers through diverse landscapes of alpine meadows, rocky terrain, and fragrant pine forests. The most common hiking routes start at Kamares (6-7 hours) and Ideon Antron (3-4 hours). The most popular trail to the summit starts from the Nida Plateau. The easiest route to climb Mount Ida takes about 3 hours from Nida Plateau. At the summit, marked by a small stone chapel dedicated to Timios Stavros (Holy Cross), hikers are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Crete. From this vantage point, you can see the White Mountains to the west, Mount Dikti to the east, and the Messara plain to the south.
