Discover more about Minoan Palace of Phaistos

The Minoan Palace of Phaistos, located near the southern coast of Crete, stands as a testament to the island's rich Minoan heritage. Situated 60 km southwest of Heraklion, the palace occupies a strategic position atop a hill, offering panoramic views of the Messara Plain and the imposing Mount Psiloritis. This location allowed Phaistos to control vital trade routes and agricultural resources, establishing it as a prominent center of Minoan civilization from around 2000 BCE to 1450 BCE. According to mythology, Phaistos was the home of King Rhadamanthys, brother of King Minos and son of Zeus and Europa. Renowned for his wisdom and fairness, Rhadamanthys became a judge in the underworld after his death. The palace complex reveals the sophisticated architecture and planning of the Minoans. The palace is divided into three construction phases because of its reconstructions. The first palace was built in the Middle Minoan IB period, around 2000 BCE. The initial palace was destroyed and rebuilt three times in a period of about three centuries. The site features a central court, grand staircases, storage rooms, and royal apartments. The West Propylon, a monumental entrance to the palace, stands out as an impressive structure. The palace also had religious and political purposes as well as sections for storage, housing, and a theater. The theater was larger than the one at Knossos. Unlike Knossos, the restorations at Phaistos have been restricted to particular areas, offering a more authentic glimpse into the past. Excavations at Phaistos have unearthed significant artifacts, including the famous Phaistos Disc, a clay tablet with undeciphered symbols, now housed in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. A visit to Phaistos offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in Minoan culture and appreciate the grandeur of this ancient civilization. Explore the palace ruins, imagine life in Minoan times, and soak in the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
