Discover more about Yenicar Aga Fountain

The Yenicar Aga Fountain is a historical landmark in Heraklion, Crete, offering a glimpse into the city's Ottoman past. Constructed during the Ottoman era, the fountain showcases architectural details reflecting the cultural influences of the time. It is located on Leof. Ikarou, near the Archaeological Museum. Candia (Heraklion) faced water scarcity during the Venetian occupation, relying on wells and cisterns. After the Ottomans gained control in 1669, ensuring the town's water supply became crucial. Turkish traveler Celebi noted 70 drinking fountains in the city. Water held significance in Ottoman faith, with fountains for religious needs named after their builders. Originally, the Yenicar Aga Fountain stood outside a beautiful building (archontiko) on Marc Augeri and I. Chronaki Street. However, the building's demolition in 1980 led to the fountain's relocation to its current site. The fountain features an arched construction with two decorated pillars and a spout where water once flowed into a marble basin. Today, it serves as a reminder of Heraklion's layered history and a peaceful spot for reflection.
