Discover more about St. Catherine's Museum

Located in the heart of Heraklion, next to the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. Minas, St. Catherine's Museum is a treasure trove of Christian art. Housed within a 16th-century church that was once part of the Sinaitic Monastery of St. Catherine, the museum offers a captivating journey through Crete's religious and cultural evolution. Founded during the Second Byzantine period, St. Catherine's served as a prominent center for intellectual and artistic activity from the 15th to the 17th centuries. The monastery school produced renowned figures in literature, the arts, and the Orthodox Church. During Ottoman rule, the church was converted into a mosque, later becoming an ecclesiastical museum. The museum's collection primarily focuses on Christian art developed in Crete from the 14th to the 19th centuries. Visitors can admire an array of Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons, some dating back to the 14th century, as well as rare manuscripts and religious relics. Representative works of the Cretan School, including icons by Michael Damaskinos and Angelos Akotantos, are among the highlights. The exhibits also feature frescoes, stone carvings, wood sculptures, metalwork, coins, and liturgical objects.
