Discover more about Holy Monastery of Rousanos - Saint Barbara

The Holy Monastery of Rousanos, also known as the Monastery of Saint Barbara, is one of the six active monasteries in Meteora, Greece. Built atop a striking, narrow rock formation, it presents a breathtaking spectacle of human architecture harmonizing with the natural landscape. The monastery is located between the monasteries of Saint Nicholas Anapafsas and Varlaam, offering panoramic views of the surrounding stone forest and the distant Koziakas and Pindos mountains. The monastery's origins trace back to the 14th century, though some accounts suggest foundations as early as 1388. The current structure took shape in the 16th century when brothers Ioasaph and Maximus from Ioannina rebuilt the abandoned site, with the church dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ and honoring Saint Barbara. The main church, or Katholikon, was built in 1530 on the ruins of an older church and features remarkable frescoes from 1560, showcasing the Cretan School of painting. Historically, the monastery served as a refuge for persecuted people. After a period of decline, the monastery was restored in the 1980s and now functions as a nunnery. Visitors can access the monastery via cement stairs and two small bridges that replaced earlier rope ladders and wooden structures. Inside, the three-story complex includes the Katholikon and cells on the ground floor, with reception areas, guest quarters, and other rooms on the upper levels. The nuns offer handmade items, books, and icons in their souvenir shop. Visiting the Holy Monastery of Rousanos provides a unique and intimate experience compared to the larger Meteora monasteries. Its serene atmosphere, stunning architecture, and historical significance make it a highlight of any trip to Meteora. Remember to dress respectfully, with women wearing long skirts and covered shoulders, and men wearing long pants.
