Discover more about Holy Monastery of Rousanos - Saint Barbara

The Holy Monastery of Rousanos, also called Saint Barbara, is one of the six active monasteries that crown the rock formations of Meteora. Located between the monasteries of Saint Nikolaos Anapafsa and Varlaam, its setting is particularly striking. The monastery's origins trace back to the 16th century when brothers Ioasaph and Maximos rebuilt the abandoned site. The monastery is dedicated to the Transfiguration of Jesus and honors Saint Barbara. The 'Katholikon', or main church, was built around 1530 and features remarkable frescoes created in 1560 by an unknown hagiographer of the Cretan School. These well-preserved paintings provide insight into the artistic and spiritual traditions of the time. Today, the Holy Monastery of Rousanos operates as a convent. Visitors can explore the three-story complex, which includes the church and cells on the ground floor, with reception areas and other rooms on the upper levels. The monastery is accessible via a bridge constructed in 1930, replacing older, more precarious methods of reaching the summit. While the ascent requires climbing stairs, the panoramic views and serene atmosphere make it a rewarding experience. Modest dress is required; however, skirts are available to borrow at the entrance.
