Car
From the main road in the Highlands, take Route 910 towards Askja. This is a gravel road, so ensure your vehicle is suitable for highland driving. After approximately 30 km, you will reach a fork; take the left path towards Route 918. Continue on Route 918 for about 25 km until you reach the Askja car park. Note that the road may be rough and conditions can change, so check for updates on road status before your journey.
Public Transportation
There are limited bus services that reach Askja during the summer months. Start by taking a bus from Akureyri or Reykjahlíð to the Askja area. The bus will drop you off at the nearest stop, which is usually the Askja car park. Check the timetables in advance as they can vary, and you may need to reserve a seat. The bus service typically runs only a few times a week, so plan your trip accordingly.
Hiking
If you're feeling adventurous and are already in the Highlands, consider hiking to Askja. The trail starts at the Askja car park. It's about a 2-3 hour hike to the caldera, so wear sturdy hiking boots and bring plenty of water and snacks. The trail can be challenging, especially if the weather changes, so make sure to check the forecast and be prepared for all conditions.
