Getting There

From the main road in Askja Caldera, head towards the marked F88 road. Follow the F88 northwards; this is a highland road, so a 4x4 vehicle is recommended due to rough terrain. Continue on F88 for approximately 25 kilometers until you reach the intersection with F910. At this junction, turn right onto F910. After driving about 10 kilometers on F910, you will see a clearly marked parking area for Herðubreið to your left. Park your vehicle here and prepare for a short hike to the base of the volcano.
