If you are traveling by car within Askja Caldera, you will need to follow the F88 (Askja Road). From the main parking area at Askja Caldera, drive south on the F88 for approximately 10 kilometers. The road is gravel and can be rough, so ensure your vehicle is suitable for F-roads. Look for signs directing you to Lake Askja. As you approach the lake, you may encounter a few smaller roads branching off; stay on the main road for the best access.

If you are already in Askja Caldera and prefer a more adventurous route, you can hike to Lake Askja from the main visitor area. Start your hike from the Askja Caldera parking lot, following the marked trail that leads towards the lake. The hike is approximately 8 kilometers one way and will take around 2-3 hours depending on your pace. Make sure to wear sturdy hiking boots and bring water and snacks, as the trail can be challenging in places.
