Getting There

Car
If you are driving from within Vatnajökull National Park, you will want to head to Route 1 (the Ring Road). From the park, take Route 1 towards Reykjavik. Continue driving for approximately 320 kilometers (around 4-5 hours depending on traffic and road conditions). Once you reach the vicinity of Thingvellir, look for signs for Þingvellir National Park. Turn onto Route 36, which leads directly to the park. Follow Route 36 for about 10 kilometers until you arrive at the Thingvellir National Park Visitor Center, located at Þingvellir, 806 Bláskógabyggð. Parking is available at the Visitor Center for a fee, so be prepared for this additional cost.

Public Transportation
Traveling by public transport from Vatnajökull National Park to Thingvellir National Park requires some planning. First, you can take a bus from a nearby settlement (such as Höfn or Skaftafell) that connects to the main bus routes heading towards Reykjavik. Check the schedules on the Strætó website for buses headed to Reykjavik. Once you reach Reykjavik, you will need to transfer to a bus that goes to Þingvellir. The bus service to Þingvellir is limited, so be sure to check the frequency of the buses and plan your trip accordingly. It is advisable to reserve your tickets in advance, especially during the tourist season. Note that the total journey can take upwards of 6-7 hours depending on the connections.
