Getting There

  • Car

    If you are driving within Þingvellir National Park, start from the Þingvellir Visitor Center. Head south on the main road, Route 36. After approximately 1.5 kilometers, look for a small pull-off on your right where you can park. From there, follow the marked walking trail that leads you towards Hestagjá. The trail is about 600 meters long and will guide you through some beautiful landscapes until you reach Hestagjá.

  • Public Transportation

    If you are using public transportation, you will first need to take a bus from Reykjavik to Þingvellir National Park. The bus will drop you off at the main visitor area. From there, since public transport does not go directly to Hestagjá, you will need to walk approximately 2 kilometers along the main road (Route 36) to reach the trailhead leading to Hestagjá. This involves a short walk along the road, so please be cautious of traffic. Once you reach the pull-off, follow the marked walking trail to Hestagjá.

  • Walking

    For those already within the park, if you are near the Silfra fissure area, you can take a scenic walk. Head northeast towards the Þingvellir church and then follow the signs towards the walking trails. Continue on the paths until you reach the junction that leads to Hestagjá. The walk from Silfra to Hestagjá is about 1.5 kilometers and will take you through some stunning landscapes.
