Nestled within the scenic Fabyan West Forest Preserve in Geneva, Illinois, the Fabyan Villa Museum and Japanese Garden offer a unique blend of architectural history and natural beauty. The Fabyan Villa, originally a mid-1800s farmhouse, was transformed in 1907 by Frank Lloyd Wright into a Prairie-style residence for Colonel George Fabyan and his wife, Nelle. The villa showcases a collection of the Fabyans' eclectic artifacts, including natural history specimens, Asian sculptures, and historic photographs. Colonel Fabyan and Nelle were more than just wealthy eccentrics; they were patrons of scientific research, including early code-breaking endeavors at the nearby Riverbank Laboratories. The adjacent Fabyan Japanese Garden, designed around 1910 by landscape architect Taro Otsuka, provides a tranquil escape with its traditional Japanese elements, including a serene pond, winding paths, and historic structures. The garden's design incorporates the surrounding woods and river to create naturalized vistas. Visitors can explore the museum and garden to experience the Fabyans' unique vision and the beauty of Wright's architectural style. The Fabyan Villa Museum is operated by Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley, in agreement with the Forest Preserve District of Kane County.
