Built between 1833 and 1835, this seventeen-room mansion served as the official residence of Illinois Governor Joseph Duncan from 1834 to 1838. During this time, the early capitals of Kaskaskia and Vandalia did not have a dedicated governor's mansion, making Duncan's home a significant place for conducting state business.The mansion is owned and operated by the Rev. James Caldwell Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR). It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and houses many original Duncan family furnishings. Visitors can explore the rooms, which are decorated to reflect the 1830s period, and learn about Governor Duncan's life and contributions to Illinois. Tradition holds that Abraham Lincoln, a contemporary and political ally of Duncan, visited the home.The mansion is located within Duncan Park, offering a pleasant setting for a historical visit.
