From Chicago, take I-55 S towards St. Louis. Continue on I-55 S for approximately 170 miles. Take exit 92A to merge onto I-72 W toward Jacksonville. Continue on I-72 W for about 30 miles, then take exit 92 for IL-97 toward Petersburg. Follow IL-97 N for approximately 10 miles until you reach the intersection with History Ln. Turn left onto History Ln, and Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site will be on your right at 15588 History Ln, Petersburg, IL 62675.

Take an Amtrak train from Chicago Union Station to Springfield, IL. The journey takes about 3 hours. Once in Springfield, you can take the Sangamon Mass Transit District (SMTD) bus route 10 to the Petersburg area. The bus ride will take approximately 30 minutes. Get off at the nearest stop to Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site, and it will be a short walk to the entrance at 15588 History Ln, Petersburg, IL 62675.
