Dickson Mounds State Museum: A Journey Through 12,000 Years

Dickson Mounds State Museum, a branch of the Illinois State Museum and a National Historic Site, stands as one of the major on-site archaeological museums in the United States. Located near Lewistown, Illinois, the museum provides a unique opportunity to delve into the world of the American Indian, offering an awe-inspiring journey through 12,000 years of human experience in the Illinois River Valley.The museum's story began with chiropractor Don Dickson, who discovered and excavated Native American burial mounds on his family farm in 1927. Instead of removing the remains, Dickson chose to leave them in place, removing only the dirt and covering the excavation with a tent, later replaced by a building to house his private museum. While the display of the skeletons was closed in 1992, the museum underwent a $4 million renovation that covered the skeletal remains and created a new museum.Today, visitors can explore innovative displays, artifacts, photographs, and multimedia productions that capture the panorama of the past. A multi-media show brings the Mississippian culture to life using lights, music, and sound. The museum also features a Discovery Center with hands-on activities for all ages. The museum grounds include the Eveland Village, where visitors can view the excavated remains of three early Indian buildings. Visitors can also explore the 230-acre grounds, which include a scenic picnic area, playground, and restored prairie.
