Step back in time and envision the future at the Century of Progress Homes, a set of five unique residences relocated from the 1933 Chicago World's Fair to the shores of Beverly Shores, Indiana. Conceived as part of the 'Homes of Tomorrow' exhibit, these homes showcased innovative architectural designs, experimental materials, and then-cutting-edge technologies like central air conditioning and dishwashers. Developer Robert Bartlett transported these homes by barge across Lake Michigan in 1935, hoping they would attract buyers to his new resort community. Today, the homes are part of the Indiana Dunes National Park and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Indiana Landmarks leases the homes and subleases them to private individuals who restore and maintain them. The homes include the Cypress Log Cabin, resembling a classic log cabin but highlighting the versatility of cypress wood; the House of Tomorrow, boasting a futuristic design with glass walls and even an airplane hangar; the Florida Tropical House, capturing Florida's beachy appeal; the Armco-Ferro House, constructed with enameled steel; and the Wieboldt-Rostone House, framed in steel and clad with an experimental material. While visitors can view the exteriors of the homes year-round, the interiors are typically only accessible during the annual Century of Progress Home Tour, held in late September. This tour offers a glimpse into the first floors of select homes, allowing visitors to appreciate the unique features and historical significance of these architectural gems.
