Getting There

• Car

  If you're driving, start from the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center located at 1215 N. State Road 49, Porter, IN 46304. Head south on State Road 49 for about 2.5 miles until you reach U.S. 20. Turn left (east) on U.S. 20 and drive for approximately 1 mile. Look for the entrance to the Indiana Dunes National Park on your right. After entering the park, follow the signs to Trail 8, where Mt. Jackson is located. The parking area for Trail 8 is free, but be sure to check for any park entrance fees if you haven't already paid.

• Public Transportation

  For those using public transportation, start by taking the South Shore Line train from downtown Chicago to the Dune Park station. From Dune Park, you will need to take a taxi or rideshare service to the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center. Once at the Visitor Center, follow the directions above for driving to Trail 8. Alternatively, there may be local shuttles available during peak tourist season that can take you closer to the park entrances or specific trails, so check local listings for availability.

• Hiking

  If you are already within the Indiana Dunes National Park and have hiked nearby trails, you can follow the marked trails leading to Trail 8. From the West Beach area, head north on the trails until you see signs for Trail 8. The hike from West Beach to Mt. Jackson will involve some elevation gain, so prepare accordingly. Make sure to carry enough water and wear appropriate hiking gear.
