Discover more about Khas Mahal

Khas Mahal, meaning 'Private Palace', is a significant structure within the Red Fort (Lal Qila) in Delhi, India. Constructed by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1639 and 1648, it served as his private residence, offering a more intimate living space compared to the fort's public areas. The Khas Mahal is the third pavilion from the south, in the row of palatial pavilions that stands along the eastern edge of the fort. The palace is divided into four main parts: the Baithak (sitting room), the Khwabgah (bedroom suite), the Tasbih Khana (place for telling beads), and the Mussaman Burj (Octagonal Tower). The interiors are adorned with carved white marble and colorful floral decorations, with partially gilded ceilings. The marble screen features the Scale of Justice (Mizan-i-adal), symbolizing the emperor's role as a moral arbiter. Functionally, the Khas Mahal was the emperor's personal residence, designed to embody imperial ideology. The eastern-facing Musamman Burj, an octagonal balcony, allowed the emperor to perform Jharokha Darshan, a daily ritual of appearing before his subjects. The palace's design integrates flowing water, river-facing views, and connected private spaces, reflecting the Persian concept of the 'stream of paradise'.
