Fambonglho Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 1984, is a verdant sanctuary spanning 52 sq km in East Sikkim. Located approximately 20 km from Gangtok, the sanctuary connects to the Khangchendzonga National Park, forming an integral part of the region's rich biodiversity. The sanctuary's altitude ranges from 1524m to 2749m, contributing to its diverse ecosystems. The sanctuary is a treasure trove of flora and fauna. It is home to a variety of species, including the elusive red panda, Himalayan black bear, yellow-throated marten, and civet cat. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the numerous avian species, including the endangered rufous-headed hornbill and various laughingthrush species. The forest is also rich in flora, with abundant rhododendrons, orchids, oaks, ferns and medicinal plants. The sanctuary gets its name from the Lepcha word 'Hambomloh', referring to the wild local avocado trees that grow in abundance here. Visitors can explore the sanctuary through its network of trekking trails. The most popular trail leads to Tinjure, the highest point in the sanctuary at 2130m, offering breathtaking 360-degree views of the Himalayas, including the Kanchenjunga range. Along the way, you can visit the wooden observation tower managed by the Forest Department. Bird watching and animal spotting are popular activities, though sightings are not always guaranteed, especially during foggy weather. For those seeking a longer experience, the Forest Department operates a log house at Golitar, just outside the sanctuary's gate. Staying overnight allows you to immerse yourself in the tranquility of the forest and perhaps catch a glimpse of nocturnal wildlife.
