Discover more about Cattedrale di Maria Santissima della Bruna e Sant'Eustachio

The Cattedrale di Maria Santissima della Bruna e Sant'Eustachio, also known as Matera Cathedral, stands as the main Catholic place of worship in Matera. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the designation of the Madonna della Bruna and to Saint Eustace, it's a majestic example of Apulian Romanesque architecture. Construction of the cathedral began in 1230, initiated by Andrea, the first Archbishop of Acerenza and Matera, and completed in 1270. It was built on the highest point of the Civita, a ridge dividing the Sassi districts, on the site of a former Benedictine monastery dedicated to Saint Eustace. To ensure its prominence, the rocky base was raised over six meters, making it visible from all parts of the city. Initially dedicated to Santa Maria di Matera, it was later dedicated to Santa Maria dell'Episcopio, and in 1389, to Santa Maria della Bruna, the city's patron saint. Since 1627, it has been co-dedicated to Saint Eustace. The exterior retains its original 13th-century Romanesque style. The façade features a sixteen-spoked rose window, symbolizing the Wheel of Fortune, and is adorned with sculptures of the Madonna della Bruna, Saints Peter and Paul, and Saints Eustachio and Theopista. The interior, modified in the 17th and 18th centuries, showcases Baroque elements. It features a wooden ceiling decorated with paintings by Battista Santoro and houses precious frescoes and numerous altars. Recent restoration work, completed in 2016, has further enhanced the cathedral's beauty and significance.
