Discover more about Villa Arianna

Located in Castellammare di Stabia, Villa Arianna is an ancient Roman villa dating back to the 1st century BCE. It is the oldest and one of the most impressive of the villas discovered in the ancient city of Stabiae, which, like Pompeii and Herculaneum, was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The villa is named after a large fresco depicting Ariadne abandoned by Theseus, found in the villa's triclinium (dining room). The excavated area of Villa Arianna covers approximately 2,500 square meters, revealing a complex layout that reflects various expansions and renovations over time. The villa is divided into four main sections: the atrium and surrounding rooms from the late Republican period, service rooms and thermal baths, side rooms off the summer triclinium from the Neronian Age, and a large palestra (gym) added during the Flavian Age. The villa's design cleverly uses the natural slope of the hill, offering panoramic views of the Bay of Naples. Villa Arianna is renowned for its well-preserved frescoes, which provide valuable insights into Roman art and culture. The small living rooms feature minimalist décor with flying figures, cupids, mythological characters, miniature landscapes, masks, and medallions. The larger rooms and halls are adorned with mythological themes and life-size figures inspired by the myths of Dionysus. These frescoes, along with the villa's mosaics, offer a glimpse into the refined taste and opulent lifestyle of its wealthy inhabitants. Excavations at Villa Arianna began in the mid-18th century and continued in the 1950s. Many of the villa's original furnishings and frescoes were removed to the Bourbon Museum (now the National Archaeological Museum of Naples). Today, visitors can explore the excavated remains of the villa, including its arcades, kitchens, state rooms, and thermal areas.
