Nestled within the nature-rich Genjiyama Park in Kamakura, the Statue of Minamoto no Yoritomo stands as a tribute to a pivotal figure in Japanese history. Minamoto no Yoritomo (1147–1199) established the Kamakura Shogunate, marking Kamakura as the political center of Japan in the late 12th century. The statue itself portrays Yoritomo in dignified attire, capturing the essence of a noble warrior. Erected to commemorate the 800th anniversary of Kamakura's joining to Yoitomo, the bronze statue looks out over Kamakura city. The surrounding park provides a tranquil environment with walking paths, seasonal flowers, and panoramic views of the city and coastline. Genjiyama Park is also known for its cherry blossoms in the spring and autumn foliage. Genjiyama Park, originally called “Genjiyama” or “Shirahatasan”, has historical ties to the Genji clan. During the Gosannen War, the Genji clan raised a white flag on the mountain to pray for victory. Today, the park is a popular spot for picnics and offers hiking trails that connect to other attractions like the Great Buddha (Kotoku-in Temple) in Kita-Kamakura.
