Discover more about Toyama Castle

Toyama Castle, located in the heart of Toyama City, is a reconstructed castle that echoes the region's feudal history. Originally erected in 1543 by the Jinbō clan, the castle passed through the hands of powerful figures such as Sassa Narimasa and the Maeda clan, playing a crucial role in the area's control. During the Meiji Restoration, the castle keep was dismantled, a fate shared by many castles across Japan. However, in 1954, a ferro-concrete replica was built, serving as the Toyama Municipal Folk Museum. Inside, visitors can explore exhibits detailing the castle's history, artifacts from the Maeda family, and other relics from feudal times. An observation deck on the top floor provides panoramic views of the city. The castle is surrounded by Toyama Castle Park, featuring a Japanese garden, spacious lawns, and the Sato Memorial Art Museum, which showcases the art collection of Sato Sukekuro, including paintings, ornaments, and lacquerware. The park is a popular spot for relaxation and cherry blossom viewing in spring.
