The Ruins of Hiroshima Imperial Army Headquarters, located in Motomachi, Naka Ward, stand as a poignant testament to Hiroshima's complex history. Constructed in 1894, the complex served as the headquarters for the Imperial 5th Division during World War II. In September 1894, the Sanyo Railway and the Ujina Line made Hiroshima an ideal location for the Japanese Imperial Army Headquarters. The building inside the Hiroshima Castle complex housed the 5th Army Division and was designated as the provisional quarters for the Meiji Emperor, who resided there for seven months. On August 6, 1945, the atomic bomb obliterated the headquarters, resulting in over 400 deaths. The ruins primarily consist of the stone foundations of the former military barracks and the remnants of a concrete bunker. This bunker is noted as the location from where the first radio broadcast was made following the disaster. Recent excavations have revealed the extensive scale of the ruins, identifying them as among the largest remnants of the atomic bombing discovered to date. Today, the site serves as a place for visitors to contemplate the weight of history and the importance of peace. Informative plaques around the ruins offer context and detail about the building's history and its significance during a tumultuous period. The atmosphere is reflective, providing a space for understanding the sacrifices made and the lessons learned.
