Discover more about Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall

The Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims, established in 2002, serves as a place to mourn the victims of the atomic bombing and pray for lasting world peace. The Hall was built by the Japanese government in Hiroshima, the site of the first atomic bombing, to preserve the memory of the victims and promote international understanding of the bombing's horrors. The Hall's design, by Kenzo Tange, encourages quiet reflection. A softly lit walkway leads to the Hall of Remembrance, a circular room featuring a panoramic image of Hiroshima before the bombing. The names of neighborhoods, many of which no longer exist, are displayed on the walls. A central water basin represents the moment the bomb was dropped, offering solace to the victims. Adjacent to the Hall of Remembrance is an area displaying photos and names of victims, along with survivor testimonies. Visitors can listen to survivors recount their experiences in the aftermath of the attack. The Memorial Hall collects atomic bomb memories and stories from survivors to mourn the victims as the survivors are aging. The Hall also collects names and photographs of atomic bomb victims.
