Discover more about Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall

The Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims, established by the Japanese government, stands as a solemn tribute to those who lost their lives in the atomic bombing. Opened in 2002, the hall is designed by Kenzō Tange, also the architect of the Peace Memorial Museum and Peace Memorial Park. Unlike the museum, which presents historical context, the Memorial Hall focuses on personal stories and remembrance. The hall's design encourages quiet contemplation. A softly lit walkway descends into the Hall of Remembrance, a circular chamber displaying a panoramic view of Hiroshima created from 140,000 tiles, each representing a life lost by the end of 1945. At the center, a fountain stands still at 8:15 a.m., the moment of the bombing, its water a memorial to those who died seeking it. The Memorial Hall collects and displays memoirs, names, and photographs of A-bomb victims. Visitors can view photos of Hiroshima before and after the bombing and watch videos of survivors sharing their experiences. The hall aims to deepen understanding of the atomic bombing's horrors and promote lasting world peace.
