Gotogoto Rock: A Symbol of Perseverance

The Gotogoto Rock (ゴトゴト石, Gotogoto-ishi) is a curious and inspiring natural attraction located in the Tosayama Kuwao area of Kochi City. This large boulder, estimated to weigh several tons, sits perched on a cliff edge in what appears to be a gravity-defying position. What makes it special is that even with a gentle push, the rock wobbles, hence the name 'Gotogoto,' which mimics the sound of the rocking motion. Despite its precarious position, the rock never falls, symbolizing perseverance and resilience. For many years, the Gotogoto Rock has been a local secret, attracting those seeking a bit of good fortune. In particular, students preparing for exams and politicians running for office visit the site to pray for success, drawing strength from the rock's unyielding nature. The site is managed by local residents, who adorn it with a Shimenawa rope, a sacred symbol in Shintoism. Nearby, you can also find the Yamanba Waterfall, adding to the area's natural beauty. In late 2022, the Gotogoto Rock was subject to vandalism, when a group of individuals attempted to dislodge the rock, wedging tools underneath it. This resulted in the rock no longer being able to move. Despite this, the Gotogoto Rock remains a symbol of perseverance, and is still a worthwhile visit.
