From Kichijoji Station (JR Chuo/Sobu Line), take bus No. 04 from bus stop #6 at the South Gate bound for “Jindaiji”. Get off at the Jindaiji bus stop, which is the last stop. The bus ride takes approximately 25-30 minutes. A single bus fare costs around ¥220. Alternatively, from Chofu Station (Keio Line), take bus No. 34 from bus stop #14 at the central exit bound for “Jindaiji”. Get off at the Jindaiji bus stop, which is the last stop. Jindaiji Temple, located in the tranquil suburb of Chofu, Tokyo, is a serene escape from the city's frenetic pace. Founded in 733 AD, it stands as the second oldest temple in Tokyo, offering a unique blend of ancient history, natural beauty, and cultural experiences. Unlike the bustling Sensoji Temple in Asakusa, Jindaiji provides a peaceful atmosphere with its lush greenery and traditional architecture. The temple's history is rooted in a legend involving a deity named Jinja Daioh, who played a role in uniting two lovers. The temple grounds feature several noteworthy structures, including the Sanmon Gate, dating back to 1695, one of the few remaining Edo-period structures in Tokyo. The Honden (Main Hall), rebuilt in 1919, enshrines the principal Buddha statue. The Ganzan Daishi Hall is dedicated to the monk Ryogen and houses his effigy. The Shakka-do (Buddha Hall) is home to the Hakuhoh Buddha statue, a national treasure and the oldest Buddha statue in Eastern Japan, which is viewable only on the 8th of each month.
