Getting There

  • Subway

    If you are starting from Shinjuku Station, take the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line (red line) towards Ikebukuro. After 5 stops, get off at Shinjuku-sanchome Station. Transfer to the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line (light blue line) towards Wako-shin-toshin and get off after 3 stops at Ikebukuro Station. From Ikebukuro, transfer to the JR Yamanote Line (green line) and travel towards Ueno Station. After 5 stops, get off at Ueno Station.

  • Walking

    Once you arrive at Ueno Station, exit through the park exit and head east towards Ueno Park. Walk through the park, passing the Tokyo National Museum on your right. Continue walking straight until you reach the main road (Route 4). Turn left onto Route 4 (also known as Ueno-dori). Walk about 1 km until you reach the intersection with Higashi-Ueno Street. Turn right onto Higashi-Ueno Street and continue walking for about 5 minutes. You will find Shitaya Shrine at the address 3 Chome-29-8 Higashiueno, Taito City, Tokyo 110-0015.

  • Bus

    From Ueno Station, you can also take a local bus. Head to the bus terminal outside Ueno Station and look for the Toei Bus No. 42 or No. 43. Take the bus towards Kiyokawa and get off at 'Higashi Ueno 3-chome' bus stop. The shrine is a short walk from the bus stop; head south on Higashi-Ueno Street for about 5 minutes to reach Shitaya Shrine.
