History of Northeast Kansas

Lawrence, Kansas, was founded in 1854 by settlers from the New England Emigrant Aid Company. The town quickly became a focal point in the violent struggle over whether Kansas would be a free or slave state, a conflict known as 'Bleeding Kansas'. The town was named after Amos Adams Lawrence, a philanthropist who provided financial support for the settlement.
On August 21, 1863, Lawrence was the site of a devastating attack known as the Quantrill Raid. Confederate guerrilla William Quantrill led a force of about 400 men in a surprise attack. They burned most of the town and killed around 150 male residents. The raid was part of the larger conflict between pro-slavery and anti-slavery forces in Kansas and Missouri.
Northeast Kansas played a significant role in the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses used by African American slaves to escape into free states and Canada. Lawrence, Leavenworth, and Topeka were key locations where abolitionists provided shelter and aid to fugitive slaves.
Established in 1827, Fort Leavenworth is the oldest active U.S. Army post west of the Mississippi River. It served as a key military installation during the westward expansion, the Civil War, and various Indian Wars. Today, it is home to the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center, which oversees training and education for Army leaders.
