History of Emporia

Indigenous Prairie Homelands

Before Emporia was established, the region formed part of the wider prairie homeland and travelling territory of Indigenous peoples, including the Kansa, Osage and other nations whose histories are central to eastern Kansas. The Cottonwood River valley offered water, grassland and routes through the tallgrass country, while later United States settlement brought profound political and social disruption. The area was included within lands affected by nineteenth-century treaties and federal policies that displaced Indigenous communities. Emporia Founded in 1857

Emporia was founded in 1857 during the rapid settlement of Kansas Territory and was named after Emporia, an ancient Greek trading city.
