Lake Constance: A Tri-National Treasure

Lake Constance, known locally as Bodensee, is Central Europe's third-largest lake, gracing the borders of Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. This vast body of water was formed by the Rhine Glacier during the Quaternary glaciation ice age. The lake is divided into the Obersee (Upper Lake), the Untersee (Lower Lake), and the Überlinger See. Lake Constance has played a significant role in European history. The Romans referred to the upper lake as “Lacus Venetus” and the lower lake as “Lacus Acronius”. In the Middle Ages, it became a major traffic center, connecting roads from all directions. The Council of Constance (1414-1418) was a pivotal event that took place here. Mainau Island, also known as Flower Island, is a must-see with its stunning gardens and parks.
