Getting There

  • Bus

    To reach the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge from Gloucester, start by making your way to the Gloucester MBTA bus terminal located at 1 Railway Avenue. From there, board the 441 or 450 bus towards 'Haymarket' or 'Alewife' respectively. The journey will take approximately 30-40 minutes. Disembark at the 'Alewife' station and transfer to the Red Line subway towards 'Ashmont/Braintree'. Ride the subway for about 15 stops, exiting at 'Kendall/MIT' station. Once you exit the subway, walk east for about 5 minutes along Main Street, then turn left onto Massachusetts Avenue. Continue walking straight for another 3 minutes until you reach the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 77 Massachusetts Ave.

  • Train

    Begin your journey at the Gloucester MBTA train station located at 2 Main St. Take the MBTA commuter rail on the Newburyport/Rockport line towards 'North Station'. The train ride should take about 40 minutes. Once you arrive at 'North Station', transfer to the Green Line subway at the 'Haymarket' stop. Take the Green Line towards 'Copley' and then transfer to the Red Line at 'Park Street' towards 'Alewife'. Ride the Red Line for 4 stops and get off at 'Kendall/MIT' station. Upon exiting the subway, head east along Main Street for 5 minutes, then turn left onto Massachusetts Avenue. Walk straight for another 3 minutes, and you will arrive at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

    If you are already in the downtown area of Gloucester and prefer walking, head towards the Gloucester MBTA bus terminal at 1 Railway Avenue. From there, take the 441 or 450 bus as mentioned earlier. Alternatively, if you are near the waterfront, walk towards the Main Street area and follow it until you reach the bus terminal. Once you have taken the bus to Alewife, follow the subway instructions to reach MIT. Walking directly from Gloucester to Cambridge is not practical, as it is approximately 30 miles.
