History of Mandalay Region

In 1857, King Mindon Min founded the city of Mandalay to fulfill a prophecy that a religious metropolis would be established at the foot of Mandalay Hill. Mandalay was designed as the new royal capital, replacing Amarapura. The city was meticulously planned with a grid layout, and the Mandalay Palace served as its centerpiece.
The Mandalay Palace, constructed between 1857 and 1859, was the last royal palace of the Burmese monarchy. It was a symbol of Burmese sovereignty and culture. The palace complex included various buildings such as the Lion Throne Room, the Glass Palace, and the Watch Tower. During World War II, the palace was destroyed by Allied bombing but has since been partially reconstructed.
In 1885, following the Third Anglo-Burmese War, the British Empire annexed Upper Burma, including Mandalay. The British deposed King Thibaw Min, the last monarch of the Konbaung Dynasty, and sent him into exile. Mandalay's role as a royal capital ended, and it became a provincial capital under British colonial administration.
Mandalay Hill is a major pilgrimage site for Buddhists and holds significant cultural importance. It is believed that Buddha himself visited the hill and prophesied that a great city would be founded at its base. The hill is adorned with numerous pagodas and monasteries, including the iconic Sutaungpyei Pagoda at the summit, offering panoramic views of the city.
Located near Mandalay in the ancient city of Amarapura, the U Bein Bridge is the world's longest teakwood bridge, stretching 1.2 kilometers across Taungthaman Lake.
