Getting There

Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the Abel Tasman National Park area, specifically from the Marahau entrance. Drive east on Takaka Hill Road (State Highway 60) towards Motueka. After approximately 24km, keep following the signs to Takaka. Once in Takaka, continue on the Main Road Takaka for about 20km, and you'll find Ngarua Caves on your right side. There is a parking area available for visitors.

Public Transport
For those using public transportation, you can take a bus from Nelson to Takaka. The bus service is operated by the Nelson Tasman Connection and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Once you arrive in Takaka, you will need to book a taxi or rideshare to reach Ngarua Caves, as public transportation does not directly service the caves. The taxi ride from Takaka to Ngarua Caves takes approximately 20 minutes and costs around NZD 30-40.

Walking
If you are already in the vicinity of Ngarua Caves and prefer to walk, you can hike from Takaka. The trek will take around 4-5 hours, covering approximately 15km. Head north on the Main Road Takaka and follow the signs towards the caves. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring enough water and snacks for the journey.
