Start your journey from Tauranga, the largest city in the Bay of Plenty. Head southeast on State Highway 2 (SH2) towards Te Puke. Continue for approximately 25 kilometers until you reach Te Puke. From Te Puke, take the exit onto State Highway 33 (SH33) toward Rotorua. Follow SH33 for about 24 kilometers, then take a left turn onto Pukehina Beach Road. Continue on this road until you reach the beach area. From here, you’ll need to park your car as there is no direct road access to Whakataratara Island.

To reach Whakataratara Island from Pukehina Beach, you will need to hire a local boat service or arrange for a water taxi. Several local operators provide transport to the island.
