Getting There

Walking
From the Taupo town center, head east on Tongariro Street towards the lakefront. Once you reach the lake, continue along the shore until you reach the intersection with Lake Terrace. Turn left onto Lake Terrace and follow it as it curves around the lake. After approximately 3 kilometers, you will come to the Aratiatia Dam Road. Follow the signs for Aratiatia Rapids Top Viewpoint, which is located about 1 kilometer up the road. The viewpoint offers stunning views of the rapids.

Biking
If you prefer biking, you can rent a bike from one of the local rental shops in Taupo. Start at the Taupo town center and head east along the lakeside cycle path. Follow the path that runs parallel to Lake Taupo, enjoying the views as you ride. After about 3 kilometers, you will reach the intersection with Lake Terrace. Continue straight onto Aratiatia Dam Road, and bike approximately 1 kilometer to reach the Aratiatia Rapids Top Viewpoint. The bike ride is scenic and relatively flat.

Take the local bus service from Taupo town center that heads towards the Aratiatia Dam. Check the local bus schedule for the exact times as they may vary. The bus will take you directly to the stop nearest to the Aratiatia Rapids. From the bus stop, follow the signs leading to the viewpoint, which is a short walk away.
