History of Rocky Point

Rocky Point, located on the rugged and scenic Norfolk Island, was first settled by Polynesians around the 14th century. Archaeological evidence, such as stone tools and remnants of canoes, suggests that these early settlers utilized the rich marine resources and fertile land of the area.
In 1774, Captain James Cook became the first European to sight and land on Norfolk Island. During his second voyage on the HMS Resolution, Cook named the island after the Duke of Norfolk. Rocky Point was noted for its dramatic cliffs and the abundance of flax plants, which Cook believed could be valuable for shipbuilding.
In 1788, shortly after the First Fleet arrived in Australia, Norfolk Island, including Rocky Point, was established as a penal settlement. The island was intended to house the worst convicts from the Australian mainland.
