Getting There

Walking
Start at downtown Bend, specifically at the corner of NW Wall St and NW Oregon Ave, which is a central point. Head east on NW Oregon Ave for about 0.5 miles, crossing the Deschutes River via the Newport Avenue Bridge. Continue on Newport Ave until you reach the intersection with NE 3rd St. Turn right onto NE 3rd St and walk north for about 0.4 miles. At the intersection with NE Hawthorne Ave, turn left and follow it as it curves into NE 5th St. Continue on NE 5th St for another 0.3 miles until you reach the intersection with NE Highway 20. Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint will be visible on your right, just across the highway. You can access the entrance to the viewpoint by crossing at the pedestrian crosswalk.

Bicycle
If you’re starting from downtown Bend, rent a bicycle from one of the local shops. Begin at the corner of NW Wall St and NW Oregon Ave. Head east on NW Oregon Ave for 0.5 miles, crossing the Newport Avenue Bridge. After crossing, turn right onto NE 3rd St and head north for about 0.4 miles. When you reach the intersection with NE Hawthorne Ave, take a left, and follow it as it curves into NE 5th St. Continue north on NE 5th St for approximately 0.3 miles until you reach NE Highway 20. Pilot Butte will be on your right. There are bike racks available near the entrance of the viewpoint.

From downtown Bend, walk to the nearest bus stop on NW Wall St. Take the Cascades East Transit (CET) Route 1 bus heading towards the NE 2nd St. and NE Greenwood Ave stop. Ride for about 10-15 minutes. Get off at the stop near the intersection of NE 3rd St and NE Highway 20. Walk north on NE 3rd St for a short distance until you reach NE Hawthorne Ave, then turn left. Continue walking for another 0.3 miles, crossing NE Highway 20. You will see Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint on your right.
