Getting There

  • Car

    If you are traveling by car, start your journey from Mendi, the capital of the Southern Highlands Province. Head southeast on the Highlands Highway (National Route 1). Continue for approximately 38 kilometers until you reach the junction with the Kutubu Road. Turn left onto Kutubu Road, which will lead you towards Lake Kutubu. The road may be rough and winding, so drive cautiously. After about 37 kilometers, you will arrive at Lake Kutubu. Look for signs along the way that indicate the route to the lake.

  • Public Transportation

    For travelers using public transportation, you can take a PMV (public motor vehicle) from Mendi to the nearby village of Kutubu. The PMV will drop you off at the junction of Kutubu Road. Make sure to ask the driver to stop at the junction. From there, you can either wait for another PMV to take you down to Lake Kutubu or arrange for a local vehicle to take you. The fare for the PMV from Mendi to the junction is usually around 10-15 PGK (Papua New Guinean Kina). The remaining distance to the lake may cost an additional fare.

    For the adventurous traveler, hiking to Lake Kutubu is an option if you're in decent shape and prepared for a challenging trek. Starting from Mendi, you can hike towards Lake Kutubu along the Kutubu Road. It is advisable to bring plenty of water, snacks, and a map for navigation. Please note that this hike can take several hours and may require overnight camping, so plan accordingly. Be sure to inform someone of your route and expected return time.
