History of Laurel Highlands

The Laurel Highlands played a significant role during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). The area was a strategic point for both French and British forces. Fort Necessity, located near present-day Farmington, was the site of the first battle of George Washington's military career in 1754. The battle was a pivotal moment that led to the escalation of the war between the British and French forces for control over North America.
